How to Choose a Dog Gate: Width, Height and Mounting Type

Measure the opening, pick a height your dog cannot clear, then choose pressure mounting for doorways and hardware mounting for the top of stairs. Here is how each type fits.

In short

  • Measure the opening wall to wall at the exact spot the gate will sit, and choose a gate whose width range covers that number with room to spare at both ends.
  • Small dogs and puppies often do well with a gate around 20 inches tall, while large dogs and jumpers usually need 30 inches or more.
  • Pressure-mounted gates suit doorways and hallways; the top of a staircase needs a hardware-mounted gate with no floor bar that swings only toward the landing.
  • Freestanding, extra-wide and playpen-panel gates cover open-plan spaces where there are no two walls to brace against.
  • A gate with a small cat door lets a cat pass while the dog stays put, which is handy in a home with both.

A dog gate is a barrier that fits across a doorway, hallway or staircase so your dog stays in the rooms you choose. To pick one, measure the opening, choose a height your dog cannot jump or climb, then match the mounting type to the spot: pressure for doorways, screwed-in hardware for the top of stairs.

The rest of this guide walks through each choice in order so you can buy once and buy right. Stay close the first few days while your dog learns the new boundary.

How do I measure for a dog gate?

Measure the opening from one side to the other at the height where the gate will press or screw in, not at floor level alone. Door frames and stair walls are rarely perfectly straight, so measure at the bottom, middle and top, and use the narrowest number.

  1. Measure wall to wall (or frame to frame) at three heights and write down the smallest figure.
  2. Check the listed width range on the gate. Aim for your number to sit in the middle of that range, since gates are harder to fit snugly at their very smallest and largest settings.
  3. If your opening is just past the range, look for a gate that comes with extensions or sells them separately.
  4. Note what is on each side: baseboards, a banister, a door that must still swing, a heating vent. These decide where the gate can sit.
  5. For stairs, measure at the top step edge and note whether one side is a banister rather than a flat wall.

How tall should a dog gate be?

Choose a gate taller than your dog can clear from a standing jump, and think about the grown-up dog, not just today's puppy. The American Kennel Club's guidance suggests about 20 inches can suit puppies and small breeds, while large breeds and jumpers usually need at least 30 inches.

Look around the gate too. A chair, a laundry basket or a low shelf beside it becomes a step stool for a clever climber. Horizontal bars can also work as a ladder, so vertical bars are the safer pattern for a dog that likes to scale things. For athletic jumpers and cats, extra-tall gates of 36 inches and above give real peace of mind.

Pressure-mounted or hardware-mounted: which do I need?

Use a pressure-mounted gate between rooms and a hardware-mounted gate anywhere a fall is possible. The difference is how each one holds.

Moving itEasy to take down and moveLeaves screw holes to touch up

Pressure gates trade some security for convenience; hardware gates trade convenience for security.

Gate makers are consistent on one point: hardware-mounted gates should go into a solid frame or a wall stud, never into drywall or plaster alone. And a pressure gate should be checked often, because the knobs can loosen as the gate is pushed and opened day after day.

Why does the top of the stairs need a hardware-mounted gate?

Because a pressure gate can be pushed out of place, and at the top of a staircase that means a fall. Gate manufacturers' safety guidance says pressure-mounted gates, including walk-through styles, should not be used at the top of stairs, and some makers say this holds even when wall cups are added.

A good top-of-stairs gate has three things:

Check the product's instructions to confirm the maker approves it for the top of stairs, since not every hardware gate is built for that spot. At the bottom of the stairs either type works, and a pressure gate is fine there.

Do I want a gate with a walk-through door?

If you will pass through the gate many times a day, yes. Most walk-through gates have a door with a latch that needs a lift or a squeeze, and many close by themselves behind you.

Auto-close is lovely when hands are full, though it can surprise a nervous dog the first time it clicks shut. Hold-open is the opposite: the door stays put until you close it, which suits a busy kitchen when you want the gap open for a while. Note the door's width too. A wide door is easier with a grocery bag or a wheeled vacuum.

What gate works for a wide or open-plan space?

For openings wider than a standard doorway, choose an extra-wide gate with extensions, a freestanding gate or a set of playpen panels. Each solves a different problem.

Extra-wide gates

These mount like ordinary gates but stretch across wide doorways and arches, usually with add-on extensions. Some long multi-panel gates also bend at the hinges to wrap around a fireplace or a corner.

Freestanding gates

Freestanding gates fold into a zigzag and stand on their own feet, so no walls or screws are needed. They are wonderful for open floor plans and for calm dogs who respect a visual line. Gate guidance agrees they are the least secure type, so they are not for stairs or determined dogs.

Are retractable dog gates a good idea?

They are a good fit for wide openings you want to clear completely, like a patio door or a wide kitchen entry. A retractable gate is a mesh panel that rolls into a narrow housing on one side, so the opening looks empty when it is not in use.

There are trade-offs. Mesh can bow if a dog leans or jumps on it, and some trainers prefer rigid gates for strong dogs and chewers. A retractable gate is happiest with a small or calm dog, hardware-mounted, and opened and closed carefully so paws stay clear of the housing.

Can a dog gate let the cat through?

Yes. Many gates have a small cat door near the bottom, sized for a cat but too small for most dogs, so a cat can reach its litter box and food while the dog stays on the other side. Check the door's size against your dog: a small dog may fit through a cat door too.

How do I protect my walls from a pressure gate?

Put a wall protector between the gate's pressure pads and your wall or door frame. These are small cups or plates that spread the pressure, so the pads do not dent paint or trim, and many add a little width when an opening is just past a gate's range.

Common dog gate mistakes to avoid

Where a dog gate fits into a new dog's setup

A gate often works alongside a crate and a pen. If you are setting up for a new arrival, our new puppy checklist goes room by room, and our dog crate size guide helps you measure for the crate. Browse every option in crates, pens and gates.

Questions people ask

Can I use a baby gate as a dog gate?

Often, yes. Many gates are sold for both babies and pets. Check that it is tall enough for your dog, that the bars are vertical and close enough that a small dog cannot squeeze through, and that the latch is one your dog cannot nose open.

What can I use as a dog gate for a wide opening?

An extra-wide gate with extensions, a freestanding folding gate or a set of playpen panels opened into a line all work. Freestanding and panel options need no walls, which makes them handy in open-plan rooms.

How do I set up a pressure-mounted pet gate?

Measure first, then set the gate's width close to the opening and tighten the tension knobs evenly on both sides until the gate sits level and firm. Push it gently to test, check the knobs again after a day, and add wall protectors if you want to save your paint.

Is a pressure gate okay at the bottom of the stairs?

Yes. Gate makers' guidance allows pressure gates at the bottom of a staircase. The top of the stairs is the spot that needs a hardware-mounted gate with no floor bar.

How tall should a dog gate be for a large dog?

The American Kennel Club suggests at least 30 inches for large breeds and jumpers. If your dog is athletic or has cleared a gate before, an extra-tall gate of 36 inches or more is the calmer choice.

Will my dog get used to a gate?

Most dogs learn a new boundary with time and gentle rewards. Introduce the gate while you are nearby, praise calm waiting on the other side, and if you have worries about how your dog is coping, ask your vet or a trainer.

About the numbers

  • Google Keyword Planner, United States, 12-month average, read 2026-11-01: about 33,100 searches a month for dog gate, about 12,100 for pet gate and for dog gate with door, about 8,100 for dog gates indoor, about 5,400 for dog gate for stairs, about 4,400 for retractable dog gate and for pet gate with door
  • American Kennel Club, dog gates guide: about 20 inches can suit puppies and small breeds; large breeds and jumpers usually need at least 30 inches; hardware-mounted gates recommended for the top of stairs and large or energetic dogs; freestanding gates the least secure
  • North States, pet gate basics: hardware-mounted gates go into a solid frame or stud, never drywall or plaster alone; top-of-stairs gates must be hardware-mounted, have no threshold and swing only toward the landing; pressure gates not recommended at the top of stairs
  • Gate manufacturers' published safety guidance: pressure-mounted gates should not be used at the top of stairs, even with wall cups
  • Whole Dog Journal, types of dog gates: retractable mesh gates can bow or pinch, with rigid gates preferred for strong dogs
