Types of Cat Litter Compared: Clay, Crystals, Pine, Tofu and More

Clumping clay is the easiest to scoop, silica crystals are the lightest on dust, and plant litters like pine, wheat, corn and tofu are lighter to carry. Here is how each type compares.

In short

  • Clumping clay forms firm clumps you can lift out daily, which makes it the simplest litter to keep fresh, though it is the heaviest bag to carry.
  • Silica crystal litter soaks up liquid inside each crystal and is very low in dust, but some cats dislike how it feels under their paws.
  • Plant litters (pine, wheat, corn, walnut, grass seed, tofu and recycled paper) are lighter and compostable in some areas; how well they clump depends on the material.
  • Unscented litter is the gentle default for most homes, because a cat's nose is far more sensitive than ours.
  • Switch litter slowly by mixing a little of the new type into the old one over a week or two, and check local rules before flushing any litter.

Hello, lovely. The short answer: the type of cat litter you pick decides how you scoop, how much dust floats up, how far it travels on little paws and how heavy your shopping is. There is no single best one, only the one that suits your cat, your floors and your back.

This guide walks through each type in plain words, with a side by side table, then shares how to switch gently. Already sorting out boxes for a busy household? Our guide to litter boxes for multiple cats covers how many and where.

Clumping and non-clumping clay

Clumping clay is made from bentonite, a clay that swells and binds when wet. Each wet spot becomes a firm clump you lift out with a scoop, so the rest of the box stays clean and you top up rather than empty it. The trade-offs: it is heavy, and cheaper blends can be dusty. Look for packs labelled low dust and unscented if your cat is new to it.

Non-clumping clay soaks liquid up into the granules without forming clumps. You scoop solids, but the wet litter stays in the box, so the whole tray needs emptying and refilling more often.

Silica crystal litter

Silica gel crystals are tiny porous beads that pull liquid inside themselves. Most crystal litters do not clump: you scoop solids, stir the crystals so the dry ones rise to the top, and change the lot once they look saturated. Crystals are light to carry and very low in dust, which is why so many people pick them. Some are made in finer "micro" sizes that feel softer, because a few cats are not fond of walking on larger, crunchy beads. Keep crystals away from curious mouths, and for a young kitten, ask your vet which litter they suggest.

Pine, walnut and grass seed

Pine pellets are compressed sawdust. When wet, the pellets break down into soft sawdust that sinks to the bottom, and the pine has a light woody smell of its own. A scoop with wide slats lets pellets pass and catches only the waste. Pine is light, low in dust and tracks less than fine sand, though some cats need time to get used to the bigger pieces.

Walnut shell litter is ground from crushed shells and comes in clumping formulas. Grass seed litter uses tiny natural seeds that clump quickly and feel soft and fine, closer to clay than to pellets.

Wheat, corn and tofu

Wheat and corn litters are ground from grains and clump naturally when wet. They are lighter than clay, low in dust, and many packs are labelled flushable or compostable. Store the bag sealed and dry. If your cat has a sensitive tummy or nibbles things, ask your vet before choosing a grain litter.

Tofu litter is made from soybean fibre pressed into short rods. It clumps fast, is one of the lightest litters to carry. Tofu comes unscented or in gentle scents, and many packs say it can be flushed in small amounts.

Recycled paper

Recycled paper litter is pressed into soft pellets. It is absorbent, very low in dust and soft underfoot, which is why some people keep it for a cat recovering at home after a vet visit (follow your vet's advice there). Most paper pellets do not clump, so you scoop solids and change the tray more often.

Odor, scent and dust

The question people ask most is which litter is best for odor. The honest answer is that frequent scooping matters more than the material. A clumping litter scooped every day, or a crystal tray stirred and changed on time, will smell fresher than any litter left too long. Clumping types make that daily job quick, because the waste lifts out whole.

Scented litter covers smells for us, but a cat's nose is far more sensitive than a person's, and a strong fragrance right where they go can put some cats off the box. Start unscented.

Disposal: bin, compost or flush?

Clay and silica crystal litters go in the trash, bagged and tied. Some plant litters, such as pine, paper, wheat and corn, can be composted in some areas, but used litter should never go on a compost meant for food plants.

Some packs say flushable. Always check your local rules before flushing anything: some towns and states ask people not to flush cat waste, older pipes and septic systems may not cope, and water treatment does not always handle it. When in doubt, bag it and bin it.

How to switch cat litter gently

Cats like routine, so change litter slowly rather than all at once. Mixing lets your cat get used to the new feel and smell bit by bit.

  1. Fill the box mostly with the old litter and stir in a small scoop of the new one.
  2. Every few days, add a little more of the new litter and a little less of the old.
  3. After a week or two, the box can be all new litter if your cat is using it happily.
  4. If your cat starts going outside the box, slow down, go back a step and ask your vet if it carries on.

A litter mat and a good scoop

Whatever you choose, two helpers make life tidier. A litter mat in front of the box catches granules from paws; honeycomb mats trap litter in their holes so you can tip it back or shake it into the trash.

A sturdy scoop matched to your litter saves time: fine slots for clumping clay and grass seed, wider slots for pellets so clean pieces fall back in. Metal scoops do not flex under heavy clumps.

Kittens and new cats

For a kitten, the litter question is one to ask your vet, since little ones explore everything with their mouths. Set up the box before they arrive, using whatever litter they knew before if you can, then switch slowly later. Our new kitten checklist covers the rest of that first week, and if you are heading off with your cat this season, traveling with a cat has a tip or two on travel litter trays.

Questions people ask

What are the different types of cat litter?

The main types are clumping clay, non-clumping clay, silica crystals and plant or recycled litters: pine, wheat, corn, walnut shell, grass seed, tofu and recycled paper. They differ in how they clump, how dusty they are, how much they track and how heavy they are to carry.

Which type of cat litter is best?

The best one is the one your cat uses happily and you can keep clean. Clumping clay is the easiest to scoop, crystals and tofu are very low in dust and light, and pine and paper pellets track the least. Start unscented and switch slowly if you change.

How do I stop cat litter from smelling?

Scoop at least daily, keep enough litter in the tray, change it fully on time and wash the tray with mild soap and water during a full change. Put the box somewhere airy rather than in a closed cupboard.

What cat litter should I avoid?

Avoid strongly scented litter if your cat seems unsure about the box, and very dusty blends in small rooms. For kittens or a cat with a health condition, ask your vet which litter suits them.

Can I flush cat litter?

Only if the pack says it is flushable and your local rules allow it. Some areas ask people not to flush cat waste, and septic systems or older pipes may not cope, so bagging and binning is the safe default.
