Senior Cat Care at Home: A Room-by-Room Guide to Easy Living

Make an older cat's day easier with steps to favourite spots, a low-entry litter box on every floor, raised bowls, warm beds, grippy floors and gentle play, room by room.

An older grey and white cat stepping down plush pet steps beside a sofa, with a round bed in the sun and a raised ceramic bowl nearby

In short

  • Put pet steps or a ramp beside every high spot your older cat still loves, such as the sofa, your bed and a sunny window.
  • Give your senior cat a low-entry litter box on every floor of the home, so a bathroom trip never means a long walk or a staircase.
  • Raise food and water bowls a little and add a water fountain or a second water station so drinking is easy from any room.
  • Place a soft, padded bed in a warm, sunny or draught-free spot, and lay grippy rugs or runners over slippery floors on the routes your cat uses.
  • Keep grooming gentle and play short and easy, and talk to your vet about any change in eating, drinking, litter habits or how your cat moves.

Hello, lovely. If your cat has started taking the long way round, pausing before the sofa jump or napping in one warm patch for most of the afternoon, a few small changes at home can make every day feel easier. Senior cat care at home is mostly about access: getting to the good spots, the bowls and the litter box without a struggle. Here is a room-by-room plan, with the kit that helps and the little habits that make it work.

Living room: steps to the sofa and the sunny window

The answer here is simple: put a set of pet stairs or a gentle ramp beside the sofa so your cat can walk up instead of leaping. Cats tend to keep their favourite spots for life, so it is kinder to bring the route down to them than to ask them to give the spot up.

Measure the seat height first, then choose steps whose top tread sits level with it or just below. Foam steps are light, soft underfoot and easy to slide around; rigid frames with carpeted treads stay put on hard floors. Look for a non-slip base, treads deep enough for a whole cat to stand on, and a washable cover, since older cats often like to nap on the steps as well. Browse more pet stairs by height.

A step and a ramp in one

This combination piece has one flat step on top and a long carpeted slope below, so a cat can choose to step or to stroll. It is a good fit for a cat who looks unsure on separate treads.

  • About 28 by 16 inches, and 16 inches high
  • Carpet tread lifts off for the washing machine
  • Rubber grippers underneath help it stay in place

Windows matter too. A sill perch keeps the bird-watching seat open without a tall climb, and a padded bolster gives a chin rest for sunny naps. Check the window depth each perch needs, and set a step beneath it if the jump still looks like hard work.

Bathroom and laundry room: a low-entry litter box on every floor

Give an older cat a low-entry litter box on every level of your home. The low front lip means stepping in rather than climbing over, and having one on each floor means no stairs stand between your cat and the box. Keep each one in a quiet spot that is easy to reach, away from noisy appliances, with good light around it.

What to look for: a front entry just a few inches high, sides tall enough at the back to keep litter in, plenty of floor space for turning around, and a smooth inside that scoops clean. Open boxes are usually easier than hooded ones for a cat who moves carefully, because there is no flap to push and no roof to duck under. A grippy mat in front catches litter and gives a steady landing pad. For more choices see litter boxes and accessories.

Kitchen: raised bowls and fresh, moving water

Lift food and water bowls a little off the floor and give them a gentle tilt, so your cat can eat and drink standing comfortably rather than crouching low. Wide, shallow dishes also keep whiskers from brushing the sides. Ceramic and stainless steel wash well and stay put better than light plastic.

Water deserves its own plan. Many cats like moving water, so a fountain can be a nice addition, and a second bowl in the bedroom or living room means a drink is never a long walk away. A bowl marked with measurement lines makes it easy to notice how much is going down each day; if that changes, ask your vet. Our cat water fountain guide compares materials, pumps and sizes, and there are more bowls and feeders to browse.

Bedroom: a warm, padded bed in the right spot

Choose a soft, padded bed with a low rim your cat can step over, and put it where it is warm: a patch of sun, beside (not on) a radiator, or in a corner away from doors and draughts. Older cats often seek warmth, and a bolster or raised edge gives a pillow for the chin. If your cat sleeps on your bed, a set of steps at the side makes the trip up and down easier.

For extra warmth, there are self-warming pads that reflect a cat's own heat and plug-in heated pads with temperature settings. We compared them in heated vs self-warming cat beds, including where each one is a good idea.

Hallways and stairs: light and grip

Plug a few soft night lights into hallway and landing outlets so the path to the litter box and the water bowl is lit after dark. Warm, dim lights are enough; the aim is a visible route, not a bright room.

Then look at the floors. Hardwood, tile and laminate can feel slippery to paws, so lay rugs or runners on the routes your cat walks most, with a non-slip backing or a rug pad underneath so they never slide. A washable mat at the bottom of the steps and in front of the bowls gives a steady place to land.

Grooming: soft tools and short sessions

Older cats sometimes groom less, so a little help is welcome. Choose soft tools: a silicone-tipped brush, a grooming glove that feels like stroking, or a small slicker used lightly. Keep sessions short, follow the direction of the fur and stop while your cat is still relaxed. Trim nails regularly with a cat-sized clipper, a few at a time if that suits your cat better. Mats that will not brush out, or skin that looks different, are worth showing your vet. See more grooming tools.

Play: easy, low-energy fun

Play still matters, it just gets gentler. Drag a feather wand slowly along the floor rather than high in the air, roll a crinkle toy across a rug, or offer a soft kicker to hug and bunny-kick while lying down. A few short sessions a day often suit an older cat better than one long one. Let your cat win often, and stop when attention drifts. More wands and teasers are here.

Introduce new things gently

  1. Add one change at a time, and leave the old setup in place for a few days while your cat explores the new one.
  2. Place steps or a ramp right where your cat already jumps, so the new route starts at the familiar spot.
  3. Use a favourite blanket or a few treats on the treads to invite a first try, and stay close during the first climbs.
  4. Keep bowls and litter boxes in the same places once they are set, since routine helps an older cat feel at ease.

Caring for a senior dog too? Our senior-friendly home guide for dogs covers stairs, ramps, bowls and beds for them.

Questions people ask

How do I keep an old cat happy at home?

Keep favourite spots within reach with steps or a ramp, put a warm bed somewhere sunny and quiet, and keep food, water and a litter box close on every floor. Short, gentle play and soft grooming add company to the day. Regular vet check-ups are part of the plan too.

What kind of litter box is best for senior cats?

An open box with a low front entry, only a few inches high, is usually the easiest to use, with taller sides at the back to keep litter in. Choose one roomy enough for your cat to turn around, and place one on every floor. If litter habits change, talk to your vet.

Do cats use pet stairs?

Many do, especially when the steps sit exactly where they already like to jump. Match the top step to the height of the sofa or bed, make sure the base does not slide, and invite the first climb with a blanket or treat. Some cats prefer a gentle ramp, so a step and ramp combination can help.

Should I raise my senior cat's food bowl?

A slightly raised, gently tilted bowl lets many cats eat in a more upright, comfortable stance, and wide, shallow dishes keep whiskers clear. Start with a low stand and watch how your cat eats. Any change in appetite is a question for your vet.

Where should an older cat's bed go?

Somewhere warm and calm: a sunny patch, a draught-free corner or near the family without being in the way. Keep the rim low enough to step over. For extra warmth, a self-warming pad or a heated pad with temperature settings can help.
