Cushings disease is a condition when the body overproduces the cortisol hormone. Its a common problem for middle-aged and older dogs, however, for cats this syndrome is rare. Cortisol is produced by the suprarenal gland, which sits next to the kidney. It sends messages to the pituitary gland, which sits at the base of the brain.

If a dog gets a growth on either of these glands, this can send h production into overdrive, which leads to several symptoms. One of the first signs owners often notice is excess thirst and urination. There can also be hair loss, weight gain, panting, skin changes, lowered immunity, and abdominal swelling, which can make the belly appear to sag.

A lack of energy is another symptom you may notice. The main problem with Cushings syndrome is the complexity and risks of the surgery that older dogs cannot handle. Moreover, pets that suffer from kidney or liver disease, which is common in older dogs, are not allowed to take strong medication.

Thankfully, there are natural options available for dog-owners who want to avoid these side effects.
